Q. How do you pronounce Kearney?

A. Car-knee

Q. Why is Kearney spelled with an “e” and Fort Kearny does not?

A. Observant readers are quick to point out the spelling differences between the fort and the town. The extra “e” in Kearney is not difficult to explain. Someone in the post office simply made a spelling error and by the time it was realized, no one felt a change was necessary.

Crane and Wildlife Information

Q. Why do the Sandhill Cranes migrate along the Platte River Region?

A. For the cranes, the Platte River Valley is the most
important stopover on this migration. The river provides the perfect spot to rest, and the nearby farmlands and wet meadows offer an abundance of food. Without the energy gained along the Platte, cranes might arrive at their breeding grounds in a weakened condition -- where food may be limited until the spring growing season begins.

The Platte River region has a variety of habitats that support cranes. The most important is the Platte River itself. The river is very shallow and sandbars dot the channels. It is here the cranes rest at night, gaining protection from predators like coyotes.

Q. When do the Sandhill Cranes arrive to the Platte River?

A. The Sandhill Cranes start arriving around Valentine’s Day, February 14. Peak numbers are reached by the middle of March.

Q. When do the Cranes leave the Platte River?

A. Cranes are opportunistic fliers, relying on thermals and tail winds to carry them along. Thermals are rising columns of warm air and when southerly winds start to blow in late March and early April along the Platte, you will see cranes testing them for flight conditions.

For more information on the Sandhill Crane migration, contact the Lillian Annette Rowe Bird Sanctuary and Iain Nicolson Audubon Center (www.rowesanctuary.org) or call 308-468-5282.

Q. What are the hours of the Great Platte River Road Archway?

A. For current hours and admission visit www.archway.org or call 877-511-ARCH (2724)

These days, it’s rare for a community to come together for a single cause—but that’s exactly what’s happening in Kearney with the publication of Kearney’s World Theatre, a new pictorial history book covering the history of the iconic movie theater from 1927 to today.

Once a main hub in the community, the theater suffered due to a changing economic and entertainment landscape. It closed operations in 2008. Now, there’s a movement afoot to bring the World Theatre back to its former glory. The book, Kearney’s World Theatre, available June 13, could be an important turning point in its revitalization—raising both awareness and funding.

Many of the images in the book were donated from personal photograph collections in an effort to help preserve the beloved theater. Additionally, half the author royalties will go directly to the World Theatre Foundation, whose mission is to save the theater.

“I hope that after reading this book people who visit the World Theatre will be conscious of the rich and varied personal stories that have formulated there since 1927,” says author Keith Terry. Terry hopes to see the theater thrive again.

Kearney’s World Theatre will be available June 13, 2011 at area bookstores, independent retailers, online retailers, and through Arcadia Publishing at (888) 313-2665 or www.arcadiapublishing.com.
A local lodging tax provides a number of benefits for tourism developers and the local community. The lodging tax can be beneficial because it:
1. Provides funding for tourism marketing and development staff at a convention and visitors bureau.
2. Provides funding for marketing and advertising activities.
3. Establishes a standard measure from which to monitor tourism trends in the community.
4. Furnishes a tool to make estimates of the economic impact of tourism.

History of Kearney Nebraska

The westward push of the railroad as the Civil War ended gave birth to many Nebraska communities, among them Kearney Junction. The name Kearney Junction was selected for several reasons. The “Junction” stemmed from the fact that the town was where the Burlington and Missouri made its junction with the tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad. The word “Kearney” was taken from Fort Kearny. The fort was named after Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny. Established in 1848, Fort Kearny offered protection to thousands of pioneers, Pony Express riders, and prospectors traveling west on the Oregon Trail. According to an 1849 War Department report, over 30,000 people bound for California, Oregon, and Utah passed through Fort Kearny during an 18-month period following the Gold Rush of 1849. Originally built near Nebraska City, the fort was later relocated to its present site to increase military strength in Central Nebraska. Fort Kearny was the first U.S. Army Post on the Oregon Trail and was never attacked by Indians.

Observant readers are quick to point out the spelling differences between the fort and the town. The extra “e” in Kearney is not difficult to explain. Someone in the post office simply made a spelling error and by the time it was realized, no one felt a change was necessary. The town site was surveyed in the summer of 1871 by Anselmo B. Smith, and the plat was filed with the county clerk on October 27, 1871.

By 1930 the population was 8,575. In 1964 Kearney was linked with Interstate 80, which created a boom in tourist trade causing construction of motels and restaurants to increase. A striking feature about Kearney is that it is located halfway between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Kearney is often referred to as the “Midway City”.
Designed by his son George Frank, Jr., it is made of red Colorado sandstone based on the H.H. Richardson Romanesque shingle style. Its focal point is an authentic five by nine-foot stained glass window by Tiffany. The mansion was wired for electricity during construction and included three bathrooms, steam heat, servants' quarters and ten fireplaces. Seven fireplaces remain.
